SIGNALING

2022

Signaling is an installation and performance project by Amalia Raye Wiatr Lewis. In the installation sculptures are made from the mycelium of oyster mushrooms. Sensors are embedded in the mycelium, monitoring the bioelectrical signaling flushing through these organisms. The sound score moves through cycles of change based on this data, revealing the typically silent-to-us communication happening within. Human, fungal, and non-human partipants inform, collaborate, and contaminate each other. Electronics, sound- and light-design by Øystein Fjeldbo.

In the performance work, the live sculptures are hooked on a portable rig with a portable speaker system. The data is here transformed more into a generative musical composition following the performers.

The project was part of the Meta.Morf biennale 2022 and has been shown at Trondheim kunsthall, Trondheim science center, Kjøpmannsgata Ung Kunst and Nils Aas Kunstverksted.
